Description

Buttercrunch lettuce is a popular heirloom butterhead variety recognized for its thick, velvety leaves and sweet, buttery flavor. Developed at Cornell University and a 1963 All-America Selection winner, it is prized by gardeners for being more heat-tolerant and slower to bolt than other butterhead types. Growing Requirements Season: Ideally grown as a cool-weather crop in spring or fall. Sunlight: Prefers full sun but benefits from partial shade in hotter climates to prevent leaf burn. Soil: Thrives in fertile, well-drained soil rich in organic matter with a pH between 6.0 and 7.0. Watering: Requires consistent moisture—about 1 to 2 inches per week—to keep leaves tender. Spacing: Seeds should be thinned to 8–12 inches apart to allow for full head development.
