Description

Characteristics Appearance: Aromatic, slightly fuzzy, grayish-green leaves with a pebbled texture; woody stems; purple flowers. Botanical Name: Salvia officinalis (from Latin salvere, meaning "to be well"). Origin: Mediterranean region, popular worldwide. Growing & Care Sunlight: Full sun is best. Soil: Well-draining; can tolerate poor soil but needs good drainage to prevent rot. Water: Water when topsoil is dry; drought-tolerant once established. Hardiness: Hardy in USDA zones 4-10, but may need winter protection in colder zones. Pruning: Prune in spring to remove old wood and promote new growth; plants often get woody and need replacing every few years.
