Description

Thyme is an aromatic herb from the mint family, widely used in cooking for its earthy, minty, and citrusy flavor profile and recognized for its potential health benefits, including anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. It is available fresh, dried, or as an essential oil.Growing thyme is ideal for beginners because it is a hardy, drought-tolerant perennial that requires minimal maintenance once established. As of 2026, it remains a staple for both culinary use and as a fragrant ground cover in modern sustainable gardens. Core Growing Requirements To ensure your thyme thrives, provide these Mediterranean-like conditions: Light: Thyme requires full sun, meaning at least 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight daily. Soil: It prefers well-drained, gritty soil. If your soil is heavy clay, amend it with sand or gravel to prevent root rot. Water: Established plants are highly drought-resistant. Water only when the top inch of soil is completely dry. Spacing: Space plants 12 to 24 inches apart to allow for their vigorous spreading habit and to ensure good air circulation.
