113 Church St., Goodlettsville Connell Garden provides more than 1,500 pounds (about a ton) of produce each year to food pantries and community help centers in the Goodlettsville area. The garden was started in 2015 on the grounds of Connell Memorial United Methodist Church, where some of our Master Gardeners attend, and they maintain the garden along with other volunteers from the church and community. |
200 Cragfont Rd., Castalian Springs Cragfont was the home of General James Winchester, a pioneer in the Middle Tennessee wilderness and a brigadier general in the War of 1812. Construction on the home was completed in 1802, and it was named Cragfont because it stood on a rocky bluff with a spring at its base. The surrounding flower gardens have been maintained by SCMG for several years, and the tuber roses bulbs sold each year at the SCMG Plant Sale come from Cragfont’s historic gardens. |
Hendersonville Public Library 140 Saundersville Road, Hendersonville SCMG began a partnership with the Hendersonville Public Library in 2024, starting with the planting of a Monarch Waystation at the entrance, and growing to include pollinator gardens, a community seed library, and a community Garden Talk series with guest speakers and demonstrations. The library is also the site of our monthly SCMG meetings. |
Liberty Garden 355 N. Belvedere Rd., Gallatin Liberty Garden offers a peaceful space to enhance the Wall of Honor and Memorial at Sumner County Veterans Park. Located behind the County Administration Building, the memorial honors those from Sumner County who have served and sacrificed in service to our country. SCMG has maintained the garden in partnership with the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 240 for more than 12 years. |
Mansker's Station 705 Caldwell Dr., Goodlettsville This volunteer project started in 2014 in Moss-Wright Park, which contains the historic Bowen-Campbell house built in 1787. The house and a recreated Fort from 1779 are highly visited by the public and school field trip groups. SCMG volunteers are responsible for the establishment and upkeep of three colorful flower gardens in the park: a Monarch butterfly way station at the house and one at the Fort, and a wildflower shade garden at the Visitors Center. |
Millersville Library 1174 Louisville Highway, Millersville SCMG has worked with the Millersville Library for several years to help support pollinators and local wildlife, and to educate the public about what they can plant in their own yards to help do the same. Volunteers maintain two wildflowers beds and help with vegetable gardens used in the one of the library's gardening programs. Future plans include getting the property certified as a wildlife habitat once the gardens are expanded. |
Rock Castle State Historic Site 139 Rock Castle Lane, Hendersonville Rock Castle, one of the oldest houses in Tennessee, was the home of Daniel Smith, an American Revolutionary War veteran and two-time U.S. Senator. The home, completed in 1796, is listed with the National Register of Historic Places and owned by the Tennessee Historical Commission. SCMG volunteers have helped maintained the gardens for several years. Rock Castle is currently closed for construction of a new visitors and event center. The site is expected to open by the end of 2025. |
Shalom Zone 600 Small Street, Gallatin In 2024, SCMG began working with Afterschool Enrichment Program at Shalom Zone, a nonprofit housed in the former Union High School. Children in 1st to 5th grades enrolled in the program, which also offers a summer camp, learn how to grow their own food in raised beds. Vegetables, fruit and herbs are shared with the kids' families and with the community on Wednesdays to help promote nutritious eating. The project was recognized as the Youth Program of the Year by the Tennessee Extension Master Gardeners in 2024. |
UT Extension Office 658 Hartsville Pike, Gallatin The University of Tennessee Extension is the outreach organization of the UT Institute of Agriculture, providing research-based farming and horticulture information to people in all 95 counties. In Sumner County, the office is where the Master Gardener courses are taught and 4-H, family nutrition and farming programs are held. SCMG volunteers take care of the gardens surrounding the building, including several seasonal containers. |
Vol State Demonstration Gardens 1480 Nashville Pike, Gallatin Volunteer State Demonstration Gardens began in 2006 as a collaboration between the SCMG and the college. A portion of land was set aside to show good gardening practices and great plant choices for Middle Tennessee, with an emphasis on educating the public. Many different plants are grown in the greenhouse to sell and raise money for scholarships. Produce from the vegetable and fruit gardens is shared with the student food bank on campus. |
