Description

The Toothache Plant (Acmella oleracea), also known as "electric daisy" or "buzz buttons," is a tropical perennial grown as an annual in most climates. It is prized for its unique "eyeball" flowers and the numbing sensation they produce when chewed. Spacing: Space plants 10–12 inches apart; they reach 12–18 inches in height and spread. Sunlight: Prefers full sun (at least 6–8 hours) for maximum flowering, though it tolerates partial shade. Soil: Thrives in rich, loamy soil with a pH of 6.0–7.5. Watering: Requires consistent moisture (about 1 inch per week) but must have well-drained soil to prevent root rot. Fertilizer: Use a balanced organic fertilizer weekly while young. Switch to high-phosphorus once buds appear to boost blooming. Care & Maintenance Pinching: Snip off the growing tips of young plants once they have several leaf sets to encourage a bushier habit. Deadheading: Regularly remove spent flowers to stimulate continuous blooming throughout the season. Overwintering: In zones colder than 10, dig up the plant before temperatures drop into the 40s and move it indoors as a houseplant.
